Ingredients (about 4 servings)
(for boiling the dal)
1 cup masoor dal/red lentils, washed & soaked in water for 1 hour then the water drained out
4 cups of water
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
(for the rice)
2 tbsp/as needed oil
1 tsp jeera/cumin seeds
2 small bay leaves
1 black cardamom, crushed to break open
2-3 lavang/cloves
1 medium-sized onion, sliced
2 cups water
1 tsp salt
(for tadka/tempering of the dal)
2 tbsp desi ghee/clarified butter
1/2 tsp jeera/cumin seeds
1 medium-sized onion, chopped small
1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste
2 fresh green chillies, slit lengthwise
2 fresh red chillies, slit lengthwise
1 tsp kashmiri red chilli powder
1 tsp coriander powder
1/2 tsp garam masala
2 tbsps chopped cilantro
